Nazareth Graduation

Nazareth College and Career Prep’s First Senior Class Graduates
The groundbreaking high school will celebrate its 2018 commencement on June 7.

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (May 24, 2018) – This spring marks a milestone for Nazareth College and Career Prep high school, which will celebrate the graduation of its very first senior class on June 7, 2018. Founded in 2014, the independent, Catholic high school uses creative strategies to bridge the education-to-employment skills gap for students of all backgrounds.

The 47 students of Nazareth Prep’s class of 2018 have had a unique high school experience. Starting freshman year, they spent one full day per week gaining work experience at internships. Over the past four years, the list of Pittsburgh businesses and organizations who participate in the program has grown to more than 100 and includes major employers such as UPMC, PNC Bank and Allegheny General Hospital.

The students also participated in hands-on learning at a variety of Network Campus partners, from the Citizen Science Lab to the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, and they consulted with members of Pittsburgh communities as they tackled real-world problems in project-based courses.

“These students are trailblazers,” says Head of School & Chief Learning Officer Lisa Abel-Palmieri, Ph.D. “They’ve been a part of Nazareth Prep since the beginning and have grown along with the school. It’s been a joy watching them find their voices and their passions, and I’m excited to see them tackle the next leg of their journeys. They’re ready.”

Throughout their time at Nazareth Prep, these students navigated personalized post-secondary pathways with the help of one-on-one mentorship and guidance. As their high school experience draws to a close, they’ve already been accepted into 38 different colleges and universities, trade schools, trade apprenticeships and direct career opportunities with companies like internship partner First National Bank.

“Four years ago, we had a vision of a school that would prepare diverse young people for fulfilling, 21st-century careers,” says Sister Linda Yankoski, President of the Nazareth Prep Board of Trustees. “I am so proud to see that vision come to fruition with the ambitious, community-minded and exceptionally well prepared class of 2018.”

The graduation ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 7, at 6:00 p.m. in the courtyard of the Nazareth Prep campus in Emsworth, 8235 River Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15202. Media is invited to attend. To make arrangements, please contact Liz Fetchin at liz@elmink.com or 724/612-9921.

The annual scholarship will be awarded to two incoming students.

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania  (June 13, 2018) – Nazareth College and Career Prep high school has announced a new, annual scholarship for high schoolers. Starting this year, the Daniel M. Rooney Ambassador Scholarship will be awarded to two incoming freshmen who have demonstrated the values of entrepreneurship, problem solving, resilient learning and servant leadership. This year’s recipients are Sakiyah Allen-Sheffey and Xavier Ruffin.

With the blessing of the Rooney family, the Daniel M. Rooney Scholarship was established to commemorate the former Steelers chairman and North Side resident, who passed away last April. A longtime friend and supporter, Rooney founded the organization’s annual Courage House Luncheon fundraiser. Recipients of the Rooney Scholarship will attend and be recognized at the luncheon this fall.

On May 9, 2018, they were also honored at Nazareth Prep’s annual Saint Joseph the Worker scholarship reception. The Rooney scholarship is available through the Saint Joseph the Worker Fund, which supports financial aid and bolsters a robust core academic program at Nazareth Prep. The school offers an array of scholarships and grants, both merit-based and need-based, to incoming as well as continuing students.
